Advertisers are funding AI slop

ADWEEK July 28, 2026 by TRISHLA OSTWAL

AI-generated content—cheap, mass-produced pages built primarily to harvest ad dollars, known as slop—is passing quality checks advertisers have relied on to avoid junk inventory, according to a report published Tuesday by Trustworthy Accountability Group (TAG), the Association of National Advertisers (ANA), and data partner Fiducia.

In some cases, advertisers are paying more to appear next to AI slop than they would to appear on legitimate publishers.

The problem spans open web and social media platforms, which, the report claims, is the fastest-growing environment of AI slop

AI slop accounts for 1.3% to 2.4% of open web programmatic spend. The firms did not share how much this equates to in dollar amount, but recent Emarketer figures show that total U.S programmatic digital display ad spending is projected to exceed $40.78 billion this year, up 6.3% year over year.

“There could be billions of dollars at stake here going to low-quality AI slop websites,” Mike Zaneis, CEO, TAG told ADWEEK, but did not share how TAG arrived at that figure.

AI text generators like ChatGPT and video tools like Higgsfield have collapsed the time and cost of producing a post. Meanwhile, social media platforms, built to reward high-volume posting, have become the natural dumping ground for engagement bait videos with dramatic reveals, such as ‘Woman Leaves House To Neighbour, His Mouth Falls Open When He Sees What’s Inside,’ per the report.

The report found that Made-for-Advertising (MFA) inventory accounts for 1.1% of spend. 88% of AI slop inventory also qualifies as MFA under existing definitions. Julie Weitzner, SVP, media practice at ANA, put the overlap close to 90%.

“With AI slop, it’s more about reducing cost and speed of content production and getting things up quickly, regardless of accuracy and legitimacy,” Weitzner said. “Just getting content that can be monetized [and] made for arbitrage.”
